As a Project C.U.R.E volunteer for nearly two decades, we sat down with Lori Powell who has volunteered in almost every available aspect of the Project C.U.R.E. organization.
Q: Why and how did you begin volunteering (and/or donating)?
I began volunteering with Project C.U.R.E. in 2006 while working at Coors Brewing Company in beautiful Golden, Colorado.
At the time, the Coors African American Employee Resource Group wanted to make an impact in Africa. After reaching out to various nonprofits, Project C.U.R.E. was the only one that answered our call. Our first volunteer day focused on Sudan, and the response was so overwhelming that we had to close sign-ups because we had too many volunteers!
When the big day arrived, the Denver media covered our efforts, and from there, the momentum grew. We continued volunteering with hundreds of volunteers each quarter, and in 2008, Coors became a proud sponsor of Project C.U.R.E.’s First Ladies Luncheon. (I’m seen with the First Lady of Ghana at a 2009 First Lady Luncheon) Over the years, many luncheons, volunteer days, and in-kind donations followed.
In 2008 I was honored to be named the first Corporate Volunteer of the Year and have been riding the Project C.U.R.E. wave ever since. Today, I’m proud to serve as the President of the Denver Ambassador Board, a dedicated group of globally minded, philanthropic individuals from the C.U.R.E. community.
Q: Why did you decide to make monthly donations?
The short answer is that it’s simply the right thing to do! Monthly donations are vital to the mission of Project C.U.R.E. They provide a steady and reliable source of funding, allowing Project C.U.R.E. to plan ahead and ensure that lifesaving medical supplies reach communities in need across the globe. With each monthly gift, I am helping Project C.U.R.E. respond quickly to crises, deliver ongoing support to hospitals and clinics, and sustain the flow of medical aid to those who need it most. My monthly donations provide the stability needed to ensure that essential medical supplies—everything from gloves and syringes to hospital beds and ultrasound machines—are always on their way to the people who rely on them. I also encourage the many professionals and retirees that travelled my Project C.U.R.E. journey with me to become monthly donors as well. I feel that I am not just giving once—I am building a legacy of hope and health.
Q: What are your hopes/expectations as you look at your path forward with Project C.U.R.E.?
I hope to continue my journey with Project C.U.R.E. and inspire many others to join me in making a meaningful difference. As an Ambassador, I am uniquely positioned to contribute and advocate for Project C.U.R.E., leveraging both my influence and experience to support its mission.
Q: Do you have any photos of you in action for Project C.U.R.E.?
Boy do I! I narrowed it down to the attached files leading to current day.
