C.U.R.E. Credits from the AAMI

September 15, 2025 | Project C.U.R.E

Biomedical Engineering students from CU Anschutz at Project C.U.R.E. Denver

At Project C.U.R.E., the journey of hope begins long before a patient sees a doctor. It starts in our warehouses, where donated medical equipment is collected, tested, and carefully packed by a team of volunteers who understand just how important it is to get things right. Among them are biomedical professionals who bring their technical expertise to work that is deeply personal.

The Quiet Force Behind Life-Saving Equipment

These professionals are the quiet force behind many of our most impactful shipments. They know that a properly calibrated monitor or a functioning defibrillator can make all the difference in an emergency. Their skill and precision help ensure that the medical tools we send will work when they are needed most.

Giving Back to Biomedical Professionals

Now, for the first time, Project C.U.R.E. can reach further to support our volunteers. Certified biomedical professionals who volunteer with us can earn Continuing Education Units through a newly approved program by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).

This important development allows healthcare technology management professionals to maintain their AAMI certification while using their expertise to support medical teams in some of the world’s most resource-limited settings. Volunteers who contribute 30 or more hours annually at any Project C.U.R.E. distribution center or through approved remote work may now earn four CEUs. Those with fewer hours may be eligible for two.

How the Program Began

The idea for this program started in our Chicago distribution center, where our C.U.R.E. Community saw an opportunity to connect professional growth with global service. Josh Lowe, Director of Biomed at Project C.U.R.E., played a leading role in developing the program. His goal was to create something that respected the standards of the field while honoring the spirit of giving.

“This is about more than checking a box for certification,” Josh said. “It is about making a real difference with your skills. Every device we touch here could be used in a setting where lives depend on it. That makes the work personal.”

One of the first to step into this effort was Steve Vanderzee, a biomedical engineer and longtime volunteer. Steve helped design and test the structure of the program. His mentorship and guidance have helped create a space where both new and experienced professionals can grow.

“When I come in to volunteer, I know I am helping someone I will never meet,” Steve shared. “It is a quiet kind of impact, but it matters. It matters to the person who will depend on that equipment.”

At the local level, Jessamyn Moore, Operations Director of the Chicago warehouse, helped bring the program to life. Her coordination has been essential in making sure volunteers have what they need to succeed and that the process runs smoothly.

“We see our biomedical volunteers not just as helpers, but as leaders,” Jessamyn said. “Their knowledge improves every shipment, and their presence builds a stronger community.”

Daniel Payne, National Director of Operations, has supported the expansion of the program across all U.S. distribution centers. His leadership helped ensure that this opportunity would be available to volunteers nationwide.

“We believe that when people bring their best to serve others, they should be supported in every way possible,” Daniel said. “This program is one way to say that we see the value of their work and we are proud to be part of their professional journey.”

A Legacy of Impact

For biomedical professionals, this is more than a volunteer role. It is a way to use highly specialized skills to create meaningful and lasting change in the world.
