Every Thursday, students from the Hinsdale Transition Center dedicate their time and energy to volunteer at Project C.U.R.E.'s Chicago distribution center, engaging in tasks such as sorting and packing essential medical supplies destined to save lives worldwide. This collaboration not only provides invaluable experience for the students but also significantly contributes to global health initiatives.

Hinsdale Transition Center: Empowering Young Adults

The Hinsdale Transition Center serves young adults with disabilities aged 18 to 22 from the Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South communities. The center focuses on promoting independence in various aspects of adult life.

The center's mission is to implement an innovative, adult-centered community program through a collaborative approach that prepares students for adulthood success while promoting opportunities for independence in these key areas.

Jahnean Marino, Special Education Teacher/Case Manager/Vocational Supervisor at Hinsdale District 86 Transition Center, emphasizes the impact of these experiences: "Volunteering offers our students the opportunity to build self-confidence, develop essential work skills, and foster a sense of independence and belonging. Project CURE has allowed our students to discover their strengths, build connections, and develop a sense of pride in their contributions. We are so thankful for Project CURE and their willingness to partner with us!"

Volunteer Opportunities at Project C.U.R.E.

Volunteers are the backbone of Project C.U.R.E., engaging in diverse roles that cater to different skills and interests. By leveraging these group volunteer activities at Project C.U.R.E. Chicago, Hinsdale Transition students gain valuable life and career skills:

  • Sorting and Packaging: Volunteers sort, package, and prepare medical supplies and equipment for shipment, ensuring that each item meets quality standards and is ready for distribution.

  • Biomedical, Surgical, and Laboratory Testing: Individuals with specialized medical equipment training help ensure that donated medical equipment is functional and suitable for donation.

  • Container Loading: Volunteers assist in loading semi-truck-sized containers for overseas delivery, ensuring that shipments are securely packed for transit.

  • Office Support: For those who prefer an office environment, opportunities exist to manage the front desk, greet guests, answer phones, and assist with administrative projects.

  • Facility Maintenance: Skilled volunteers help maintain the infrastructure of warehouses and distribution centers, ensuring that facilities remain operational and safe.

Project C.U.R.E. offers engaging opportunities for groups ranging from 5 to 150 people. These experiences are designed to build teams, accomplish meaningful goals, and have fun, all while contributing to a life-saving mission.
