Helping Babies Survive
Saving newborns one minute at a time
Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is a training course geared towards teaching local nurses, midwives, and traditional birth attendants in developing countries the most successful ways to save a newborn’s life in the first critical minute after birth, known as The Golden Minute. HBB is a Train-the-Trainer model, where U.S. trained facilitators travel to developing countries to train all who attend the births of babies. The end result is leaving them with the skills and education to train others in their communities, resulting in a sustainable program that repeats itself for years to come.
Project C.U.R.E. conducts Helping Babies Survive training in more than 15 countries worldwide to train local in-country nurses and birthing attendants on the HBS curriculum. Note: Open opportunities for HBS trips will be sent to our list of HBB Master Trainers when available.
Help us as we work to use HBS techniques to save the lives of newborns and reduce the rate of infant mortality around the globe!
In 2010, the American Association of Pediatricians (AAP) initiated the Helping Babies Breathe Program (HBB) in collaboration with numerous global health organizations. Among HBB’s partners are the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). HBB is a direct response to the WHO’s estimate that 1 million babies die each year from birth asphyxia, with the goal of reducing the global child mortality rate by two-thirds before 2015.
Project C.U.R.E is a proud partner of the HBB Global Development Alliance (GDA), a public-private partnership working towards achieving a significant reduction in neonatal mortality by increasing the availability of resuscitation to manage newborn asphyxia during birth.
Project C.U.R.E. is also a proud partner of the Saving Mothers Giving Life (SMGL) Alliance, which is committed to saving women and newborn’s lives from complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
Project C.U.R.E is able to provide HBB trainings worldwide in part thanks to generous grants from Ronald McDonald House Charities, Newmont Mining Company and Kinross Gold Corporation.
Since the start of the HBB program at Project C.U.R.E. in 2013, we have trained 529 in-country birth attendants, sent 50 U.S. Master Trainers abroad, and facilitated 18 Train-the-Trainer Trips worldwide! An estimated 15,000 newborns have been served as a result of Project C.U.R.E.'s HBB efforts.
