Gene Deems’ multifaceted journey with Project C.U.R.E. began a decade ago with C.U.R.E. Cargo when he brought together students from St. George’s University and Medicine with a Mission. They managed to raise $20,000, helping fund a shipping container with $400,000-worth of donated medical supplies for a hospital in Grenada.
Years later, while volunteering with Hospice of the Chesapeake in Maryland, Gene learned about the organization’s sister hospital in South Africa. Since the hospital couldn’t accommodate the delivery of a cargo container, Gene turned to C.U.R.E. Kits. These pre-packed kits hold essential medical supplies designed to be transported and delivered directly to doctors and medical professionals by individuals like you.

Gene coordinated the delivery of five kits to the South African facility.
In 2020, Gene joined the Annapolis Rotary Club and began exploring ways to bring C.U.R.E. Kits into Rotary service projects. His first initiative funded and delivered 10 kits internationally. Building on that success, Gene’s current project supports 20 kits, funded by his club, neighboring Rotaries, and donation- matching from Medicine with a Mission.
So far, 13 kits have been funded:
Additionally, two more kits are in progress, and four kits are planned. Gene’s goal is to expand this effort through Rotary clubs across the United States.
Why This Work Matters

C.U.R.E. Kits address a critical need: even basic supplies like gloves, bandages, and wound care materials are limited in many healthcare settings. These supplies enable healthcare providers to deliver care immediately and safely, multiplying the impact for patients and communities alike.
Rotary clubs are uniquely positioned to gather resources and create a lasting change. Whether your club funds a single kit, partners with other clubs for multiple kits, or coordinates a full container shipment, every effort directly supports healthcare providers doing what they can with what they have.
Project C.U.R.E. provides guidance, supplies, and support to make participation straightforward and impactful. Rotary members can help ensure essential medical care reaches communities that need it most!
